Metallurgical Engineering
  Facilities Available:

The Metallurgical Engineering Department has well-equipped laboratories. The laboratories are funded by AICTE, MHRD, DST and UGC.
Laboratories in the Department
1.Physical Metallurgy Laboratory
This is one of the important laboratories for the students, in which they learn the basic fundamentals of physical metallurgy, including the study of microstructures of steels, cast irons, and important non- ferrous alloys.
2. Computer Laboratory
The computing skills required by the curriculum are learned in this lab. The required courses prescribed for this lab are Java, C, C++. The advanced modeling software’s helpful in designing the fabrication process such forging, rolling etc are available in this  laboratory  such as Deform 3D, Solid Edge etc. This lab is provided with 35 Pentium IV computers.
3. Fuels and Refractory Laboratory
Different tests required knowing the properties of fuels and refractories are carried out in this lab. The calorific value of fuels, the flash and fire points of liquid fuels, the carbon residue analysis of the fuels are carried out for different fuels.
4. Principles of Extractive Metallurgy Laboratory
The basic principles of pyro-, hydro- and electro- metallurgical extraction of different metals from their ores are carried out in this lab.
5. Mineral dressing Laboratory
All the required physical beneficiation of ores/minerals is carried out in this lab for further utilization of oreconcentrates.
6. Mechanical working of metals Laboratory
The modeling of fabrication processes using software's such as Deform 3D, Solid Edge, Forge etc can be done.

7. Metallurgical Analysis Laboratory
In this lab, chemical analysis of different materials is carried out. The chemical analysis gives the composition of different elements present in an alloy or in scrap of materials.

8.Electro Metallurgy and Corrosion Laboratory
The electrochemical principles learned in the classroom can be neatly demonstrated using different electrolytic cells and various electrolytes in this lab. The fundamental corrosion principles involved in various catastrophic failures under various environments can be understood using these lab-scale apparatus.
9. Mechanical Metallurgy Laboratory
The basic mechanical properties of different materials are carried out in this lab. The principles of elasticity, plasticity and mechanics can be clearly understood by carrying out these experiments for the students in improving their knowledge in mechanical behaviour. 

10. Metal casting Laboratory
The fabrication of intricate shapes using casting process is carried out in this lab. The fundamental foundry principles are learned by actually carrying out experiments and this gives an opportunity to quantify the properties of the castings.

11. Heat treatment Laboratory
The principles of heat treatment involved in modifying the microstructures to improve the mechanicalproperties of different materials can be studied in this laboratory






Equipment Purchased and installed under TEQIP  

1. High Temperature Sintering Furnace
This instrument is used for carrying sintering operations on green powder compacts at high temperatures upto 16000C. The Furnace consists of a heating chamber. Required furnace atmospheres (i.e. inert and active) can be obtained. The Furnace can be operated both in horizontal and vertical modes with the available tilting mechanism.

2. Induction Melting Furnace
The useful capacity of this induction furnace is 20 Kgs (Aluminium). The furnace can be used for melting of ferrous and nonferrous alloys. The
operation is completely controlled by the electrical cabinet.

3. Differential Scanning Calorimetry/ Thermo gravimetric Analyzer
This instrument helps in calculating different thermodynamic properties like heat capacities, melting points, and phase transformation
temperatures with the help of heat input and sample weight differences during the experiment. This instrument can be used for testing of the
above properties for different materials like metals, alloys, polymers and ceramics. The instrument has the provision to maintain different atmospheres inside the working chamber.

4. Wear and Friction Testing Machine
The wear rate of different materials can be found using this instrument. The included software cal- culates the frictional force; wear rate and helps in evaluating different samples by comparing the temperature and humidity values. The wear disc rotates at a speed of 2000 rpm and humidity canbe varied upto 90%.
